Things we're thankful for and the arrival of our elf!

This Thanksgiving we have many things to be thankful for! In a time when so many people are unemployed, Jason and I are both grateful for our jobs. We're also grateful for the lower gas prices. We both drive a lot (Jason much more than me) for work, and so the lower gas prices have really helped our budget. We're also so grateful for our family. Even though the kids keep us on our toes 24/7 and getting a good night's sleep seems to be a thing of the past, we're so grateful for Jacob and Emily and there's never a dull moment with the two of them around!
This year, we decided that we wanted to focus on putting more family traditions in place for Christmas. In the past, we haven't focused on that as much because the kids haven't been old enough to really understand, but Emily is definitely old enough to get it this year and she actually remembers a few things we've done in the past (like going out to look at Christmas lights on Christmas Eve which was a family tradition I had as a kid....she's already asking when we're going to go).
I had read quite a bit about the Elf on the Shelf on a message board that I visit, and it sounded like such a cute idea. The way it works is that the elf arrives at your house and keeps track of who's being naughty and nice. He leaves and gives a report to Santa each night while everyone is sleeping and returns (in a new place) each morning. People have all sorts of creative ideas about things that their elves have done like having a snowball fight (leaving fake snow behind), baking cookies, and bringing holiday ice cream for the family. I'm really looking forward to this! At first, I was just going to buy an elf and use, but the set comes with a book, and I wanted to have the book so I gave in and paid for the set (if you're wondering where to find them, I found ours at Hallmark).
Our elf arrived last night. We read the book to the kids before they went to bed and Emily was very excited to find him this morning hanging out on our Christmas tree!

I thought the idea of the elf sounded cute when I heard about it. We saw the elf in the NPR "Wireless" catalog and my 10 year old read all about it and wanted us to get it. I didn't, but still think it's such a fun idea.

The elf has been a lot of fun...we just have to remember to put him in a different place each night!@ I just know that one of these nights we're going to forget and then we'll have to come up with a story to explain why he didn't move....

I love Elf on a Shelf. I'm not sure how long this tradition has been around. I inherited 3 elves from my mom a few years before she passed away. She was going to toss them and I told her no, I'll take them. Mom always put them on a branch in the Christmas tree, so that's where I keep mine. Looking at them reminds me of my mom and the Christmas memories I have of her. You've started a great tradition!
